Social Norms Theory...

So I have decided on my project! After some evaluation, the project that works best with me is the Tooele County School District. I met with the great ladies at the Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention. We decided that I would develop a presentation based on the ideas of Social Norms Theory as it relates to alcohol and tobacco use in the secondary education system in Tooele County. Using the Sharp Survey I will look at the actual use versus the perceived use and apply it so that kids don't need to think that all everyone is using and in turn relieve some of the peer pressure involved. I am pretty excited to work through this project and give something back to my community!

Where To Start!

So this semester I am taking a course called Applied Community Development. I am pretty stoked for this class but at the same time I am nervous as there is quite a bit of unsurety that goes with it. At the beginning of the course I expressed my interest in working outside the Cache Valley area. Steve thought I would work well with the Millard County Economic Development Department. Unfortunately, we were unable to establish anything with them and Steve told me to go looking for something. My first thought was to see if Tooele Police Department had something for me. After talking with them to see what they had we decided that in the time frame I was working in it may not be best fit for me and my project. They were kind enough to invite me to a community counsel that has various agencies from around the county that do various things. This was a great lead generator and  was able to get in touch with some people from the school district that run a project called The Truth. For those that live in Tooele CountyYou have probably seen their campaign called most don't. They are most notorious for their billboard ad with the kid with his finger in his nose (the pic I posted was of a girl... thats not what is on the billboards.) That same day I also setup a meeting with the Grantsville Police Department to see if thay had something that I could work with. They suggested that I may work with one of their officers on the night out against crime project. This is a project traditionally happens every year on a night and they plan a carnival type event with a crime prevention theme. Grantsville City has done this in the past but due to budget constrains had dropped in the recent years. and they are looking to get it going again this year even if there needs be a campaign made for contributions. I am still working on finalizing the what when and where of it all but I would be excited to for either of these awesome people. Stay tuned for more and I will keep you posted.
